“risk”

Our family trip over the past 10 days was an incredible time of bonding with the kids coupled with a lot of time for Gina and I to reflect on our marriage and just about every other part of our lives. We had family time each day and did things like zip-lines, ropes courses, a [...]

day|twelve update: 07|15|10

I thought I should take a little break from our Griswald family vaca to let everyone know that, so far, we have survived. God has been so good on the trip…over 25 hours of driving and not ONE altercation between the 3 kids! I’m dubbing it the “Miracle on I-40.” Seriously, it has been great [...]

10,000 hours

In Malcolm Gladwell’s best selling book, Outliers, he uncovers through anecdotal and empirical evidence that repeated performance overtime is the key to mastering a craft and thus predicting future success. Gladwell finds that those most often viewed as “geniuses” in a specific field are those that have spent more than 10,000 hours honing their skill. Whether [...]

necessary violence

It happens every time I watch any sporting event that I have the slightest rooting interest in. It is innate. Well, if not innate, it was learned early on, reinforced during my “glory days” and perpetuated by a little “wanna be” spirit. What is it, you ask? It is that “violent growl,” for lack of [...]

here we go … again!

Anyone who has planted a church quickly learns that there is no shortage of material on the subject. Countless books, talks, manuals, seminars, and coaching-sessions are there waiting for every insecure/fearful church planter (which is pretty much all of us) to consume. I’ve tried to be open to input from many different sources and at [...]

cool down … june 19

This weekend we are hosting a bbq from 11am – 2pm on Saturday.  We’ll provide the hotdogs, burgers and bottled water; bring your favorite cold beverage, a side to share, and your lawn chairs. Of course, no PHX BBQ would be complete without a huge waterslide and sno cone machine so we’ll have those [...]

ultimately ultimate

What is ultimate in our lives?  The great/scary thing about our lives is we are writing the answer to that question constantly and we don’t need words to do it. What we place as ultimate in our lives, whether intentionally or unintentionally, shapes everything we do. If comfort, safety, kids, vacations, things, status, job level, [...]

boycotting social media?

Ironically enough, I learned of this post via twitter. The post, “I’m Quitting…Social Media,” was written by a good friend of mine who pastors a church full of hundreds of college students in the Tempe/Phoenix area. Justin, himself only 31, is hardly “old school” and God is using his leadership to make a tremendous impact.
Anyway, [...]
